There is a very unique and large garden here, secluded and lush, where something is in bloom every day of the year. Under tall and stately shade trees, surrounded by vibrant flowers and shrubs and the soothing call of birds, residents can retreat to quiet benches for private moments there or share it in the company of family and friends. Our residents enjoy taking walks and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the garden.
The Ballentine’s Rebecca Gwaltney Gray Garden was made possible by a bequest from Rebecca G. Gray, who was a member of first Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. The garden was dedicated on September 13, 1992.
It is 175 feet long and 60 feet wide and is enclosed with brick pillars and cedar fencing.Brian O’Neil of Southern Meadows Landscaping, Inc designed the garden. Features include: brick walkways with and enclosed patio, a well and irrigation system, water garden, raised planter and professional lighting.
The traditional design of the garden emphasizes plants of interest to older people. Spaces are wide enough to allow residents to get around easily and safely. The lawn areas were designed to be used for croquet, etc.
The designer also intended to appeal to residents’ senses: splashing water, fragrant bushes, the sound of grasses blowing in the breeze, and colorful plants and flowers.Something is in bloom in garden throughout the year.
Six teak benches have been donated to the garden. The garden is accessible to residents during day light hours. Check with the front desk for specific information. We encourage you to enjoy this beautiful extension of The Ballentine.
